Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman will be appearing together on screen for the first time in Jay Roach’s upcoming film, ‘The Roses,’ a remake of Danny DeVito’s 1989 dark comedy ‘The War of the Roses.’ Tony McNamara has adapted the screenplay, and filming is set to begin in the UK around June of this year.

The story follows Theo (played by Cumberbatch) and Ivy (played by Colman), a seemingly perfect couple with successful careers, admirable children, and a satisfying sex life. However, beneath their facade of perfection, cracks begin to show as Theo’s professional aspirations crumble, leading to fierce competition and resentments between husband and wife. This darkly comedic tale delves into themes of love, power, and ambition as the once-happy couple engages in a hilariously ferocious battle of wills.

‘The Roses’ marks Roach’s return to feature filmmaking since his Academy Award-winning thriller ‘Bombshell,’ which starred Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, and Margot Robbie. Roach’s recent projects include Apple TV+’s crime drama ‘High Desert’ with Patricia Arquette, as well as HBO’s ‘Coastal Elites’ and ‘All the Way.’ His biopic ‘Trumbo’ featured Bryan Cranston and Helen Mirren.

Cumberbatch is currently involved in Netflix’s psychological thriller ‘Eric,’ set to premiere on May 30, 2024. He is also working on ‘The Thing With Feathers,’ an adaptation of Max Porter’s novel, and has appeared in projects like ‘The Book of Clarence’ and Wes Anderson’s ‘The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar.’

Colman recently wrapped up filming ‘Paddington in Peru’ and gained acclaim for her role as Queen Elizabeth II in Netflix’s ‘The Crown.’ She also appeared in ‘Wonka’ alongside Timothée Chalamet but had to leave Netflix’s ‘Heartstopper’ due to scheduling conflicts.

McNamara, the writer behind ‘The Roses,’ is known for his work with Yorgos Lanthimos, including ‘The Favourite’ for which Colman won an Academy Award. His credits also include Hulu’s ‘The Great.’

The original ‘The War of the Roses,’ starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner, was based on Warren Adler’s novel and achieved box office success, grossing over $160 million and receiving three Golden Globe nominations.
